Top Pavers for
Florida Homeowners
By Augusto Lodos, Owner & Executive Commercial Director · May 16, 2026
Most paver guides are written for a national audience, and Florida breaks half their assumptions. There's no freeze-thaw here. What we get instead is heat that decides whether a deck is usable barefoot, storm rain arriving faster than the ground absorbs it, and soil light enough to move under anything set on it. Here's how each material actually behaves in Central Florida — and the question that matters more than which one you pick.
Why Florida's Climate Decides the Material
Most paver guides are written for a national audience. Florida breaks several of their assumptions.
There's no freeze-thaw cycle here, so the failure mode people plan for elsewhere barely applies. What we get instead is heat that makes surfaces unusable barefoot, storm rain that arrives faster than the ground can absorb it, humidity that grows algae on anything porous and shaded, and pool chemistry attacking the surface every time someone climbs out.
A surface in Central Florida has to handle:
- Sustained direct sun and surface temperatures that decide whether a deck gets used
- Two inches of rain in an afternoon, and somewhere for it to go
- Humidity and shade that turn into algae on the wrong material
- Chlorine and salt in any pool-adjacent area
- Ground that moves, because the soil here is light and sandy
That last one is the reason material choice is the second question. The first is what's going underneath.
Travertine: The Pool Deck Default
Travertine is what we install most around water, and the reason is temperature. It's a porous natural stone that doesn't hold heat, so it stays walkable in July when concrete next to it can't be stood on.
- Stays noticeably cooler underfoot in full sun
- Naturally textured, so it grips when wet
- Handles chlorine and salt without surface breakdown
- Warm, irregular tone that suits resort-style pool decks
- Performs well in high humidity
If you're doing one upgrade to a pool area, this is usually it.
Concrete Pavers: The Sensible Default Everywhere Else
Concrete pavers do most of the work on most Florida properties, and there's no snobbery in that — they're the right answer for a lot of sites.
- Extensive choice of format, colour and finish across Belgard, Tremron and Pavestone
- Strong enough for vehicle traffic on driveways
- Individual units lift and replace — no visible repair seam
- Sensible cost across large areas, residential or commercial
- Suits driveways, patios and walkways equally
Where we'd steer you elsewhere: a pool deck in full sun, where the heat difference against travertine is something you'll notice every day.
Porcelain: Low Maintenance, Modern Look
Porcelain has grown fast in Central Florida, mostly for one reason — it's effectively non-porous. Nothing soaks in, which in a humid climate means algae and staining have very little to work with.
- Very low maintenance, no sealing cycle
- Highly resistant to stains, moisture and algae
- Precise, contemporary appearance for modern elevations
- Available in slip-resistant finishes for wet areas
It's less forgiving of an imperfect base than other materials, which brings us back to the same point again.
Brick: The One That Ages Well
Brick suits traditional architecture and the older streets around Winter Park, where a modern format would look imported.
- Colour is through the material, so it doesn't fade to a different shade
- Structurally durable under vehicle traffic
- Naturally slip-resistant texture
- Long service life — St. Augustine's brick streets are still in use after a century
Marble and Natural Stone: The Top End
Marble and premium natural stone go into estate properties, resort-style pool surrounds and commercial entrances where the ground is doing presentational work.
Higher spend, and worth it in specific places rather than everywhere. We'll usually recommend concentrating it — stone where people stand and look, a well-chosen paver where they don't. Around Dr. Phillips and the estate properties west of Orlando, that split is how most of these projects get specified.
Permeable Systems: For Water That Has Nowhere to Go
Given how Florida rain arrives, permeable paving is increasingly a drainage decision rather than a style one. Water passes through the surface into the base instead of sheeting toward your house.
- Reduces standing water and runoff after heavy rain
- Takes pressure off site drainage and foundations
- Helps with erosion on graded sites
- Useful on larger driveways and open areas
Particularly relevant in Clermont, where the grade means water always goes somewhere — and it's better if you decide where.
How to Actually Choose
Work in this order:
- Where is it, and who's standing on it barefoot? That decides heat tolerance first.
- What's the architecture doing? The ground should agree with the building.
- How much traffic, and what kind? Vehicles rule out some formats.
- What happens to the water? Grade and drainage before pattern.
- What's the ten-year number? Not the install price — the install plus what it costs to keep.
We'd rather talk you into the right material for the specific site than the most expensive one on the list. A cool deck you use every day beats a showpiece you avoid in August.
The Base Is the Product
Every material above fails on a bad base. That's not a caveat, it's the main event.
Central Florida's soil is light and it moves, so every job we do goes onto a 4" concrete base, levelled and compacted, before a single unit is set. It's the slowest part of the work, the only part nobody photographs, and the first thing cut when a quote comes in low. You won't see the difference on handover day. You'll see it by the third summer.
There's one job we won't take. If your existing concrete is cracked and you want pavers laid over it, we'll explain why that fails — the movement that cracked the slab is still there, and now it's under your new surface. We'll offer the proper alternative. If you'd rather have the overlay, we'll pass. We'd rather lose the job than put our name on something that lifts in two years.
Final Thoughts
Choosing pavers is really two decisions: what goes on top, and what goes underneath. The first one is visible and gets all the attention. The second one decides whether you're happy in ten years.
