It's a failure-mode question, not a durability question — concrete cracks all at once, pavers settle one section at a time. Here's what actually decides which one you're getting.

A cheap paver on a properly built base will outlast a premium paver on a bad one. Here's what actually determines the outcome, and how to tell which surface you're looking at before it tells you itself.

It's a Failure Mode Question, Not a Durability Question

The paver units — the actual concrete, travertine, or stone pieces you walk on — are genuinely durable. That's not where surfaces fail. What fails is what happens underneath them when Central Florida's light, sandy soil moves, which it does continuously, not dramatically.

A rigid surface has no way to accommodate that movement. It cracks. Once cracked, the crack grows, water gets in, edges lift, and the repair options are bad — patch it (visible, temporary) or remove the whole thing and start over.

A paver surface handles the same ground movement differently, because it isn't one piece. It's hundreds of individually interlocking units sitting on a base built to move with the soil rather than fight it. Movement shows up as a gentle settle in one section rather than a crack across the whole surface. That section gets lifted, the base under it corrected, and the same units reset — no seam, no color mismatch, no sign anything happened.

That's the actual comparison: not "how long does it last" in the abstract, but "how does it fail, and what does the fix look like when it does."

What Actually Determines the Number

The base. This is the one that matters most and gets talked about least. Every job we do gets a compacted base built to full depth before anything goes on top — the slowest, least visible part of the work, and the first thing a corner-cutting installer shortens to hit a lower price. A thin or poorly compacted base looks identical to a proper one on the day the crew leaves. The difference shows up in year three, at the edges.

Compaction method. Base material dumped and rolled once behaves differently than the same material compacted in lifts — laid and compacted in stages. The lifts method holds its shape under years of load. The single-pass method doesn't, even with the same amount of material.

Edge restraint. Pavers are held in place by interlock and friction, not adhesive — which means the edges of the whole system need proper restraint to keep the field from creeping outward over time. Skip this and even a good base and good units will migrate at the perimeter.

Joint sand. What's swept into the gaps between units matters for weed resistance and washout resistance, particularly in a state that gets the rain volume Florida does.

Maintenance. Periodic sealing extends the working life of the surface and keeps joint sand locked in place. It's not mandatory for the surface to function, but it's the difference between a surface that looks the same in year ten and one that looks tired by year five.

What Doesn't Determine It, Despite What Gets Marketed

Material grade matters for how a surface looks and feels — travertine stays cooler underfoot than concrete pavers, color-through units resist fading better than surface-coated ones — but material grade doesn't override a bad base. A premium paver on a shortcut base fails the same way a budget paver does, just with a bigger invoice attached to the mistake.

This is why the question worth asking a contractor isn't "what pavers do you use." It's "what's going under them, and how deep."

What to Actually Look For

If you're evaluating a quote or comparing contractors, this is the real checklist:

  • Base depth and material, stated specifically — not "we do it right," an actual number
  • Compaction method — in lifts, or one pass
  • Edge restraint type
  • Whether joint sand is standard or polymeric

Ask, and listen for specificity. A contractor with a real standard answers in one sentence, without checking anything. A contractor without one hedges.
